Seagate’s First 8 TB hard drive

Recently a new breed of hard disk drive is introduced by Seagate Technology for RAID applications and for network area storage (NAS). From Seagate a new family of NAS hard disk drives includes a model that has capacity of 8 TB. It’s the industry’s first hard drive of this kind and it is targeted towards medium and small businesses and also for personal use.

StorageReview-Seagate-Surveillance-HDD-8TBNAS HDD of Seagate is 8 TB & 3.5 inches which is available on six magnetic recording with 1.33 TB capacity. For a minute of spindle speed the hard drive features 7200 revolutions, Serial ATA interface and 256 MB DRAM cache.

216 MB / s of maximum sustainable media are declared by the manufacturer to cache transfer rate, compared to previous-generation drives this is comparatively high. The new HDD contains an average operating system of 9 W and 7.2 W of average idle power.

The models with 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB, 4 TB and 6 TB capacities are included by the latest family of Seagate (NAS HDDs). Spindle speed of 7200 RPM is associated with the hard drive of 6 TB and 8 TB capacities, whereas the speed of 5900 RPM is with the remaining drives feature. In order to offer high read performance, high capacity PMR platters i.e. 7200 RPM spindle speed and 256 MB DRAM cache will help the new 8 TB and 6 TB, which is useful for both desktops and NAS environments.

Whereas Seagate previously offered 8 TB drives for near line/ archive, enterprise NAS applications and enterprise capacity. These drives are optimized for racks, servers, maximum reliability etc.

For SMB NAS applications hard disk drive uses platforms are developed to handle additional vibration, so the reliability is more when compared to desktop class HDDs and when compared with enterprise-class hard drives, it is less advanced. Usually dual plane balance control is featured by NAS HDDs, also special firmware and improved heads.

WD Red lineup of Western Digital is competed by Seagate’s NAS HDDs. 6 TB is the maximum capacity offered by the WD Red. To select the customers, the new Seagate NAS HDD 8TB shipped. At the end of Q1 2016 wide-scale availability is expected. Since ST8000VN0012 or ST8000VN0002 are the PMR ones, the customers should be on the lookout for it.
